#BSG: WTF Happened to Starbuck?

Caprica‘s here, and ‘The Plan‘ is on the way, get back to Battlestar Galactica with the seemingly sorest spot

We spent all of last season asking, “What’s the deal with Starbuck?” Furrowing our brows wondering if she was dead, resurrected, a cylon, a human, something else, where did she go, how did she get back, why was there another of her on Earth, and so on, and so on. *NO* explanation could have lived up to expectations, so *NO* answer is best. I would rather have a vague, enigmatic solution than a cheap Scooby-Doo ending, or something that explicitly and feebly explained every question. Presented here, is a theory. Follow @flimgeeks for more discussion.

How: Science

Faster than light #FTL drives are able to move matter from one place to another instantaneously. Cylons downloading to a resurrection chamber spans relatively great distances . Why would the combination of the two, resulting in someone clearly corporeal ‘disappearing’ during the finale seem so unreasonable?

If cylon resurrection=Email, and FTL=sending attachments,
Than FTL+Download=Email with Attachments.

No main group featured on Battlestar posessed the technology, but it is a reasonable extension of two systems that form a foundation to the entire ‘SciFi‘ aspect of the show.  This could be achieved by further advancement of their technology, but seems slightly beyond their reach in each stage of the cycle. Could this help explain how the Final 5 went from Old Earth to New Colonies? So who was not pictured that could potentially use this system? More on that when we delve into the Why behind the How.

Why: Philosophy

Referred to as an ‘Angel’ but more accurately described as a ‘Valkyrie’, Starbuck was most importantly a catalyst for change. The prophetic title of ‘Harbinger of Death’ is never one that I took to be negative. Death , in Tarot for example, is usually deciphered as rebirth, change, that the cycle is nearing completion.

Her ‘Destiny’ is how it applies cyclically. She is the one who retrieved the arrow of Apollo, she is the one with the vision of the Eye of Jupiter, and she is the one who ultimately leads them to Earth. I assume the 2000year old Starbuck on Earth dropped the bomb, and presumably she’ll have a hand in the armageddon of their new aka ‘Our’ Earth.

The end of the cycle is reliant upon awakening, and the realization of your role within the cycle. The cylons continue upon their path of immortality through resurrection, and mankind’s path of immortality through procreation. Each turn of the wheel gets them closer to a union between man and machine, and Closer to God. Without Starbuck as a catalyst, the cycle would continue without the changes.

Religion as unifying theory

Colonial polytheistic religion, cylon monotheistic religion, different as they seem actually share the same foundations. The Gods of Kobol hand down their religion to the humans, while the lost 13th Tribe of Razor handed down theirs to the ancestral cylons. I suspect that elements of each religion were variations on the One True Cylon God (hereafter lazily referred to as 1CG) but with a certain Bene Gesserit spin. Wheels within wheels as both religions contain misinformation and propaganda, while still containing the same instructions, ultimately leading them to the same end; the same finale.

Both religions were perverted by cults worshiping 1CG, leading to schisms from ironic truth. Despite what they’d been taught for generations, each race had to get Closer to God in faith as well. In Caprica, this religious cult is pictured significantly and contributes to the birth of the first cylon. Baltar becomes your Personal Jesus, but the message influenced by ‘Head 6′ was clear and resonated. The cylon ‘rebels’ were devoted to a belief that the Final 5 were key to their salvation, and were in fact Closer to God by creating life.

This is not Yahweh. This is not Allah. Please do not confuse ‘religion’ with ‘christianity’. I believe the One True Cylon God is a technology based god, something akin to the Architect in the Matrix Trilogy; or the Ghost in the Shell. This would account for a number of tech related mishaps/miracles that can only be credited to Deus Ex Machina, or literally translated, God from the Machine.

  • Raptor in finale nuking the final conflict
  • Anders and Cylon Raider standoff
  • The bond between Starbuck and Scar
  • maybe even had a hand in colony armageddon
  • The ‘fluke’ of the Bucket being impervious to cylon EMP
  • Coincidental meeting of Human & Cylon during supernova of the Eye of Jupiter

This involvement or contact, quite literally a divine intervention, is focused and intensified when an evolutionary leap is imminent; when the wheels of the cycle are nearing a complete revolution. While seemingly always present, it appears that some are more ‘in tune’ with the 1CG, as basestar hybrids spout cryptic prophetic messages amongst the gibberish of ship operations, while prophets like Pythea, Roslyn or Boomer can share and decipher visions of the Opera House.

Starbuck, like the incorporeal ‘Head 6′ and ‘Head Baltar’ who show up at the next aka ‘Our’ turn of the wheel, are agents of the 1CG. So when her mission is complete, when the cycle begins anew, she is returned to the 1CG. *Poof*

Coming Soon: So who is this God person anyway? Daniel and the lost cylon theory.

Tried to find a contact so I could email this to you, but couldn't find one on the site.

Thought you may like this – Katee Sackhoff did a Q&A this past weekend at Starfest and talked about what she thinks Starbuck is, how she felt about her last scene, etc.
