My movie collection

An ulterior motive for this blog is to help me organize, streamline, and update my movie collection.

To date I’ve catalogued 492 DVDs, HD-DVDs, and box sets.  I still need to input my VHS movies and video games, which are numerous.  The entire collection is going to be housed in my tv room so there’s going to be some serious cutting.

I have room for 640 regular sized DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and video game cases in 8, 8-shelf towers.  The top of the towers is leeway for box sets.  My approach will be one in, one out.  Whenever I want to acquire something new, something has to go.  It’s going to be tough but I think it will really refine my collection.

The first purge is going to be VHS.  I’ve already replaced a lot of these on DVD or other formats.  The tough thing is deciding whether to hold on to any of these tapes for collectibility or simply to replace or cut them entirely.

I’ve decided to consider video games as part of the overall collection and not it’s own entity.  I’m likely to be a little more selective in a games library as I’d rather have the space for more movies.  Licensed games are my weakness as they make a nice companion piece to their movie counterpart.  Who else owns World War II Combat Iwo Jima just so it can sit next to Letters From Iwo Jima?

By limiting my collection space I’m hoping to reduce the impact of price on my purchases.  I own far too many movies just because they were cheap.  Showgirls V.I.P. edition anyone?  With the sharp decline in DVD prices I could easily be buried in lackluster movies at this point.

This should be an interesting experiment.  Stay tuned for a full inventory list as well as potential cuts.  I’ll try to keep the tears to a minimum.
