Star Wars… again

Just a quick note for Star Wars fans, and any others who may be near a video retailer this week. New Star Wars DVD’s are being released tuesday.

Do Not Buy Them. Period.

There is absolutely no way you can justify paying for these, and you will regret it later.

Here’s the deal. The Original trilogy (4,5,6… or New Hope, Empire, and Jedi… or the *good*ones) are coming out on DVD (again, which is already funny cause Lucas said he was never going to release them on DVD) on tuesday.
Issue One: Cost
$27.99 CA (or thereabouts) EACH and contains the remastered version and the original theatrical version as well as some special features.
For those keeping score at home, there was a set two years ago of the original trilogy, which included a bonus disc with a great 2hr documentary on Lucas and his Star Wars empire. Last year you could pick up the same set for about $10 cheaper, but it did not include said doc.

So now comes another set, sold separately, that’s already an extra $25 or so to get all three (why in the world would you only buy one?) and they have already announced (unofficially) that there will be a box-set of these versions coming out later. My guess, next christmas (or the following christmas if they’re going to release a box of the new trilogy), they’ve all come out for the holidays aka the single highest entertainment media buying period of the time in the year. So if you actually are going planning to buy this version, then at least wait and save yourself the aggravation and cash.

Issue Two: Theatrical versions
As for the original theatrical versions, which I would assume they’d be over-hyping, hasn’t been mentioned too much. In 5 different commercials I saw on TV, only one actually even mentioned the original theatrical versions. Kind of a big deal, cause you made fans wait for so very long for a DVD version of the classic trilogy… and now the original, Han shoots first, Luke’s father at the end of jedi is NOT Hayden Christensen, dewback-free… is finally included in a version for you to truly remember the classic trilogy in all it’s sketchy glory.

In 4:3 fullscreen.

Whaaa? Would that not defeat the entire purpose? What should be the focus of this release, is instead practically a bonus feature.

Issue Three: The Principle of the thing
I’m neither a fanboy, nor a star wars hater. I’m a fan. I feel jilted, and almost coerced into spending way more money than I should be. Noone’s forcing me to shell out the cash, but still, the point remains.
